Review of SuperStar Gemini

Launched in 1992, SuperStar Gemini is one of the Star Cruises ships, together with Star Pisces, SuperStar Aquarius and SuperStar Libra. The ship cost $240 million to build and was last refurbished in 2013 for USD 50 million.

History - construction and ownership

Star Cruises, member of Genting Hong Kong, is the 3rd biggest cruise line in the world, following Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Cruises. The company dominates the Asia-Pacific market. It is owned by Genting Hong Kong and is listed on the Singapore Exchange and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Star Cruises was established as an associate of Genting Group of Malaysia, incorporated on November 10, 1993, in Bermuda, with corporate headquarters in Hong Kong. The first ships of the company were two cruise ferries bought from the bankrupted estate of Swedish Rederi AB Slite. Star Cruises purchased several other used vessels in the following years. In 1998, the company took delivery of its first newbuild - SuperStar Leo (Norwegian Spirit). Sistership SuperStar Virgo followed in 1999.

The 50,764-ton, 1,750-passenger cruise ship SuperStar Gemini was built in 1992 by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France. The first name of the vessel was ms Dreamwar and it was constructed with the idea to sail for Norwegian Cruise Line. In 1998 the cruise ship was upgraded (lengthened), at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven, Germany and her name was changed to Norwegian Dream. The ship was added to the fleet of Star Cruises at the end of 2012 as SuperStar Gemini. In the period between 1995 and 2008 SuperStar Gemini was sailing under the name MS Gemini.

During the lengthening process in March-May 1998, the ship was cut in half and a new 40-metre midsection was added. The maximum passenger capacity was increased significantly. SuperStar Gemini naming ceremony was held on 5 December 1992 at Port Everglades, the place where the vessel started her first cruise to Bermuda the next day.

The cruise ships in the fleet of the company are recognized by their funnel design. Star Pisces was the first with such design. Later the cruise company based all of its ships on the Star Pisces' funnel design.

Cruise itinerary program

SuperStar Gemini itinerary program is based on cruises in Asia. In 2017-2018, the ship was home-ported in Laem Chabang (Bangkok, Thailand). The ship's new deployment was for the period December 17, 2017, through April 27, 2018. From Thailand, SuperStar Gemini operates roundtrip 3-night cruises to Sihanoukville Cambodia and Koh Samui Island (departures every Sunday), roundtrip 2-night cruises to Sihanoukville (departures every Wednesday) and roundtrip 2-night cruises to Koh Kong Island (departures every Friday).

For 2018-2019 winter season (November 5, 2018, through April 28, 2019), the liner was homeported in Malaysia (ports Langkawi, Port Klang, Penang) and Thailand (Phuket). The 3-night itineraries were mixed with 4-night (departing February 6) and 2-night (departing February 10) special voyages visiting Langkawi, Port Klang, Penang, Phuket, Krabi, Singapore.

In the period February 7-16 (Chinese New Year), Star Cruises designated SuperStar Gemini as 'hotel ship'. During this time, the vessel was permanently docked in homeport Sanya China (at Phoenix Island International Port). This way, Star Cruises introduced (for the first-ever) in Asia the 'Floating Hotel' cruise vacation concept, providing a unique holiday vacation experience. The 'cruise deals' were inclusive of stateroom, onboard dining and entertainment, as well as all onboard holiday-themed events (Valentine's Day dinner, Lunar New Year family dinner, live magic show performances, kids programs). All main onboard venues (including the 11 restaurants and the Theater Lounge) remained open during the nights. There was also an extensive night-life program. 'Hotel ship' tickets prices per night / per person started from USD 78 (Inside Cabin fare based on double occupancy).

History[edit]

SuperStar Libra in Keelung Harbor, Taiwan

Star Cruises was founded as an associate of the Genting Group of Malaysia,[2] incorporated in Bermuda on 10 November 1993 with its corporate headquarters in Hong Kong.[3] The company's first ships were two cruiseferries acquired from the bankrupted estate of SwedishRederi AB Slite. In the following years, the company purchased several other used ships. In 1998, Star Cruises took delivery of its first new build, SuperStar Leo, followed by sister ship SuperStar Virgo in 1999. Star Cruises also acquired Sun Cruises the same year.

In 2000, Star Cruises acquired Norwegian Cruise Line,[4] including its subsidiaries Orient Lines and Norwegian Capricorn Line, becoming the largest global cruise line in the world. Norwegian Capricorn Line operations were soon merged into those of Star Cruises. Before the purchase of NCL, Star Cruises had several other new builds either planned or already under construction, but with the merger of the two companies, most of the constructed builds joined the NCL fleet instead of Star Cruises. /king-arthur-free-online/.

In 2001, Star Cruises founded a new sister company, Cruise Ferries, which began operating its sole ship, Wasa Queen, on short cruises from Hong Kong to Xiamen followed by overnight gambling cruises from Hong Kong and gambling cruises from Port Klang in Kuala Lumpur. Wasa Queen ceased to function and was sold to another company in 2007.

In 2004, SuperStar Leo, Star Cruises' then-largest ship, was transferred to NCL to take over Norwegian Sky cruises as she had to be rushed into service under NCL America brand due to the Pride of America not being ready on time due to sinking at Lloyd Werft shipyard. Since 2006, the trend has been that new ships were to be built for NCL, and the old ships in the NCL fleet would be transferred to the Star Cruises fleet in Asia.

In early 2008, both NCL America and Orient Lines brands were discontinued, with the latter's sole ship, MS Marco Polo, sold to Greek interests. Also in that year, the first ship from NCL was transferred to the Star Cruises fleet as SuperStar Libra.

Starting from 2011, Star Cruises received a new hullart. SuperStar Virgo, SuperStar Aquarius and Star Pisces have received their new hullart.

It was announced on 27 April 2012 that the Norwegian Dream will join the Star fleet, she will be named as SuperStar Gemini and will start service in 2012.[5]

On 7 October 2013, Star Cruises announced that Star Cruises and their parent company, Genting Hong Kong, have entered into an agreement with Meyer Werft shipyard for the construction of one new cruise ship for Star. The vessel will have capacity for 3,364 passengers at double occupancy.[6] The ship will be delivered sometime in Fall 2016.

Star Cruises announced on 10 February 2014, that a second ship was ordered and will be delivered by Fall 2017. Both ships will 150,000 GT.[7] On 9 February 2015, the first steel cutting ceremony for Genting World was held at Meyer Werft shipyard.[8]

The company announced in March 2018 that one of its ships, SuperStar Libra, would end her public cruise operations for the company on 27 June 2018.[9]

On 8 March 2018, Genting Hong Kong announced that the first Global-class newbuild that was previously allocated to Star Cruises would join the Dream Cruises fleet.[10]

On 11 September 2018, Genting Hong Kong announced that SuperStar Virgo would move to Dream Cruises in April 2019 and be renamed the Explorer Dream.[11] In November 2018, SuperStar Gemini returned to Malaysia for a six-month deployment.[12]
